Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Apeleo Zubiri from the Institute of Micro- and Nanostructure Research (IMN, Prof. Erdmann Spiecker) and the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) was awarded the “Best Oral Presentation Award” at the ”International Microscopy Congress (IMC19)” which took place in Sydney from 9th until 14th of September 2018. His talk with the title “Accessing the 3D microstructure of complex geometric, biological structures using electron tomography and nano X-ray tomography” was selected out of 181 oral presentations in the category ”Instrumentation & Techniques” from an independent scientific committee.

The materials scientist and physicist reported about the latest achievements and breakthroughs using nano X-ray tomography and electron tomography to reveal the special Gyroid 3D photonic crystal structure on the wing scales of the butterflies Callophrys rubi and Thecla opisena, which help to understand the optical properties and developmental processes of these complex photonically-active membrane structures made of chitin.
