Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation: New EU project at the Institute of Biomaterials

The Institute of Biomaterials (Head: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini) has been successful as partner of a large EU project in the TEAMING Horizon 2020 call “Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation. These large projects funded by the European Commission are established to support research infrastructure in EU countries which are weak in their science/technology basis. The project “Centre for functional and surface-functionalized glasses (FunGlass) is funded with 15 million Euro and aims at establishing a new Centre of Excellence in Trencin, Slovakia on Advanced Glass Materials. The role of the Centre, which will be led by Prof. Dusan Galusek,  Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín, is to carry out R&D activities in the area of glasses with special functional properties for a range of novel applications. The FAU Institute of Biomaterials is one of the 4 international partners collaborating in this new Centre of Excellence, together with Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research, University of Jena, Germany, Centre for Mechanics of Biological Materials, University of Padova, Italy, and Institute of Ceramic and Glass, Madrid, Spain. The kick-off meeting of the project was held in Trencin, Slovakia, on 7-8  March 2017 (photo).
